Pranee is an active member of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) and participates in the monthly Family Fun Days. In this event, the children of Riverside engage in fun science projects such as flower chromatography, making snow from an absorbent polymer, and making string telephones.
Return to Taft Elementary
October 2016
At Taft Elementary School, the Harman lab helped the students apply the scientific method to their science projects.
STEM Academy at UCR in Science
May 2016
The STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) Academy students visited UCR to see chemistry demos and tour the facilities. The Harman lab gave a demo about electroplating copper pennies with zinc to give the appearance of alchemy. Each student was able to keep their "gold" penny as a memento.
Pursuit of Awareness through a College Experience (PACE)
August 2014
Harman Lab teamed up with the Migrant Education Program of Los Angeles County at UCR's office of Chicano Student Programs to conduct a chemistry workup to give the students some hands on experience with polymer chemistry. Here they made superballs from the reaction of sodium silicate and ethanol.
Taft Elementary School
October 2014
For National Chemistry week, Harman Lab introduced the 3rd and 4th graders to the scientific method using fun games. About 75% of the students at this school are from low income families lacking a college degree, so we hoped to expose them to life as a graduate student and answer any questions to inspire their interest in science.
Fitzgerald Elementary School
October 2014
Harman Lab gave a presentation on the difficulty of decomposing plastics and what they are chemically composed of. Afterwards, we had the students pitch their own ideas about how to solve this problem, and held an informal Q&A session about what a career in chemistry is like.
